The Santa Maria High School Alpine Club’s Community Service Day
The Santa Maria High School Alpine Club’s community service day was a resounding success, with 26 club members lending a hand to the city of Santa Maria. The event, which took place on a sunny day in April, was a testament to the club’s commitment to giving back to the community.
Trail Maintenance and Repair
The club members spent the morning working on the trails at Los Flores Ranch, a beautiful outdoor space that offers stunning views of the surrounding hills. The students were tasked with maintaining and repairing the trails, which included clearing debris, pruning vegetation, and repairing damaged sections of the trail. Some of the tasks included: + Clearing fallen branches and leaves from the trail + Pruning overgrown vegetation to maintain a safe and accessible path + Repairing damaged sections of the trail using natural materials + Removing invasive species that were threatening the native ecosystem The club members worked together to complete the tasks, demonstrating their teamwork and dedication to the project.
“I learned that even though it is challenging, hard work and perseverance pay off. I realized that every single person has a unique story to tell, and that we can learn from each other’s experiences and backgrounds.” Through their volunteer work with the local park system, the students were exposed to various aspects of the park’s operations, including trail maintenance, wildlife management, and education programs. Wendy noted that one of the most rewarding aspects of the project was seeing the positive impact they had on the community, which included increased foot traffic and community engagement. By participating in the volunteer work, the students gained valuable life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving, as well as a deeper appreciation for the natural environment.
The Alpine Club, which has been active on the SMHS campus since the 1960s, is dedicated to teaching students about the beauty of nature, healthy outdoor activities, and team-building.
